Free Sprite Palette Extractor

Extract the exact colors used in a sprite or pixel art image, or the most frequent ones when there are more than 64, and export them as .hex, .gpl for GIMP or a PNG swatch strip. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device.

Drop a PNG, WebP or JPG here. Max 4096 by 4096 pixels.

How to use it

  1. 01

    Drop your image

Drag a PNG, WebP or JPG onto the drop zone, or pick a file. Transparent pixels are ignored.

  2. 02

    Review the swatches

See every unique color with its hex code and pixel count. Images with more than 64 colors show the top N by frequency, and you choose N.

  3. 03

    Export

Download the palette as a .hex file, a GIMP .gpl palette or a PNG swatch strip, or copy a single hex code with one click.

Frequently asked questions

Are the colors exact or approximated?

Exact. The tool reads every pixel and counts the real RGB values, with no quantization or smoothing. For photos or heavily anti-aliased art, use the top N option to keep the palette small.

What is a .hex palette file?

A plain text file with one hex color per line and no hash sign. Lospec, Aseprite and many pixel art tools import it directly.

How do I use the .gpl file?

Copy it to the palettes folder of GIMP, Krita or Inkscape, or import it in Aseprite. The file is the standard GIMP palette format.

Does it count transparent pixels?

No. Fully transparent pixels are skipped. Semi transparent pixels are counted by their color and ignore alpha.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is read on a canvas in your browser and never sent anywhere.
