Frequently asked questions
Why integer factors only?
Pixel art stays sharp only when every source pixel maps to a whole block of output pixels. Fractional scaling forces uneven pixel sizes, which looks like shimmering or distortion in motion.
What happens when I downscale?
The tool samples the center of each block of pixels. This is lossless only when the image was originally upscaled by that same factor, so a warning appears when the image size is not evenly divisible.
Is the image sent to a server?
No. Resizing happens on a canvas inside your browser with image smoothing turned off. Nothing is uploaded.
What size should my pixel art be?
It depends on the engine and the screen, but 16, 32 and 64 pixel bases scaled by whole numbers are the common choices. Our pixel art sizes guide covers the trade offs.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. The PNG export keeps the alpha channel exactly as in the source.
