How to Add Transparent Animated Effects to Foundry VTT
Create a spell effect, preserve WebM transparency, and place it as an animated tile in Foundry VTT. A practical workflow with looping and file-format checks.
A glowing portal should sit on top of your battle map, not inside an opaque black rectangle. For an animated overlay, you need both a video format that carries transparency and a player that supports it. In Foundry VTT, a transparent WebM placed as a video tile is a practical starting point.
What you need
You need access to a Foundry world where you can upload files and create tiles, plus a WebM effect with an alpha channel. Sprixen VFX Studio exports this format together with a transparent PNG spritesheet and a setup guide. Foundry is a separate product. Manual tile placement needs no Sprixen module.
1. Create the effect
Open VFX Studio and explore 36 effects across fire, ice, storms, water, nature, dark magic and combat. Search for a spell or filter by category. Change the primary and accent colors to match your scene. Keep intensity restrained when the effect will sit behind tokens or remain visible throughout a session. For a reveal or a finishing blow, a brighter accent can help the moment stand out.
Use the map preview before exporting. An effect that looks dramatic against black may be less readable over a busy map. Check a light backdrop as well, especially for ice and radiant effects. Previewing and manual customization are free; an export pack costs 2 credits.
2. Download and unpack
The pack contains effect.webm, spritesheet.png, preview.png, effect.json, and README.txt. For a Foundry video tile, choose effect.webm. Do not convert it to MP4: the exported transparency would be lost in that workflow. Keep the other files for future game-engine use or to check animation dimensions.
3. Place a video tile
In Foundry, select Tile Controls, create a tile, and use the file browser to upload and select your WebM. Place it over the intended part of the scene and adjust its size. A portal generally reads best at a different scale from a small token aura, so judge it against your actual grid instead of the preview alone.
Enable autoplay and looping for persistent effects. For an impact, disable looping and trigger playback when the encounter calls for it. Exact controls may vary with your Foundry version. Consult the official tile documentation for the current interface.
Optional: try the Foundry module beta
VFX Studio also includes a Copy Foundry install URL button. Paste that manifest into Foundry Setup, Install Module, then enable Sprixen VFX in a test world. As GM, open Tile Controls and choose the Sprixen wand. With version 0.3 or newer, upload the whole Sprixen ZIP or paste the effect code copied from your export. Duration and looping are imported automatically. Choose selected tokens, targeted tokens or scene center, then set size. The module can remove completed one-shots and selected Sprixen tiles.
The beta targets Foundry 13-14, but real-world runtime compatibility testing is still in progress. It does not synchronize your account library, follow moving tokens or automate combat. Read the module guide before testing. No Sprixen password, session token or API key is required.
Transparency troubleshooting
A desktop video player may show transparency as black even when the file contains alpha. Test the original WebM in Foundry before converting or editing it. Also check that you selected the video, not a flattened screenshot. The Foundry media guide explains supported formats and media considerations.
Keep the encounter readable
Start with one or two animated overlays. Check that names, health indicators, and token silhouettes remain easy to read. Avoid stacking several bright effects over the same area. Ask a player using a modest laptop to test the scene before a long session; performance depends on scene complexity and the client device, not only the file size.
What this workflow does not automate
A video tile is an animated visual asset. It does not automatically react to spell rolls, calculate damage, or attach itself to combat events. Those behaviors need a separate Foundry module or a workflow you configure yourself. Sprixen's pack is designed to give you the visual asset without claiming that extra integration.
Try animated VTT effects in the live preview, then make a palette that belongs to your next encounter.
